More Able and Talented


Dear Parents/Carers,

As many of you already know the school keeps a register of pupils who have Additional Learning Needs. This is necessary in order to comply with the ALNCO Code for Wales. 

As a school we are fully committed to creating a fully inclusive curriculum where all learners are inspired, motivated and supported to reach their potential. We believe that every learner should have access to an education that meets their needs and enables them to participate in, benefit from, and enjoy learning. The Leonardo Effect approach ensures that all children’s views, wishes and feelings are at the heart of the process of planning the support necessary to enable them to overcome any barriers to learning. 

During this term we intend to contact all parents to inform them as to whether their child has been identified as having any addition learning needs (ALN) so you are fully aware of the support they are receiving in school.  You may have already discussed this with your child’s class teacher who has already put in place additional support for your child within the class setting.  This additional support for your child can be subtly placed in the class, whereby learning can be made more accessible.  Teaching assistants have been allocated specific times with your child either individually or within a small group.  Miss Nicholson is working with children throughout the school using the Accelerated Learning Programme fund from Welsh Government to support learners whereby the current crisis may have impacted your child’s learning.


To ensure that we do our very best to meet the needs of ALL our children we also draw up class registers of pupils who are particularly able and/or talented in one or more activity or curriculum area. This ability could be in a subject area within the school (e.g. English, Art, Mathematics, Design, ICT) or it could be in an activity outside school (e.g. Music, dance, sport). This information is beneficial as it helps us to improve our existing provision and the range of activities available to our children. 

If your child has been identified with ALN/MAT they will have the opportunity to put together an Individual Development Plan (IDP) which will be shared with you and your child and this will highlight any specific targets they will be working on in school and you could support them with at home.

More Able and Talented is the general term for this concept; 

  • Children may be More Able and/or Talented in diverse fields (academic, creative, sporting, social, leadership); 
  • More Able children would demonstrate a higher ability than average for the class and would often require differentiated tasks and opportunities to learn through challenges; 
  • More Able children will be working at two levels above the majority of children in the class and would sometimes require additional and different provision. This would be supported by an IEP; 
  • Talented children demonstrate an innate talent or skill in creative or sporting fields; 
  • More able and talented children may be “high flyers”, coasters or disaffected
